Freedom Show @ Winter Street Studios
In a time of Unlimited Corporate Greed, Private Prisons, Unemployment, Homelessness, Outsourcing, and Obscene Wall Street Salaries and Bonuses, Kallinen Contemporary and Winter Street Studios announce FREEDOM, a 3 day Political and Social Art Showto benefit The National Lawyers Guild at Winter Street Studios, 2101 Winter Street, Fri. June 8h, from 5pm – 11pm, Sat. June9th, from 2pm- 10pm and Sun. June 10th, from 1pm till 5pm.
Kallinen Contemporary is Renowned Civil Rights Attorney Randall Kallinen’s new fine arts gallery for cutting edge art from Houston’s Leading Artists at 511 Broadway (SE Houston inner loop) in Old Harrisburg. The National Lawyers Guild is representing pro bono (for free) many of the citizens who were arrested last year during the Occupy Houston protests in Houston. All proceeds will go to help The National Lawyers Guild defend these citizens who are facing jail and prison time for exercising their first amendment rights. This event will give an outlet for artists who want to help change the current system, or to show solidarity with those who are standing up and are trying to make a change. This show will give Houston artists a place and an opportunity to make their own statement to the public in support of the constitutional freedom guaranteed to all people (not corporations), while keeping 100% of their own sales.
There is a $25.00 entry fee for the first art piece (and $10 for each piece thereafter). All of the sales will go to the artists and profits from the show will go to The National Lawyers Guild. The artist’s are responsible for selling their own art as Kallinen Contemporary wants the artist to have the freedom to sell their work for whatever price or barter or however they wish. No size limits, no price limits, no limit on number of paintings. It’s all about freedom. The artists can also voluntarily donate to The National Lawyers Guild any amount they wish from their sales or keep the entire amount. They have the freedom to choose.

Every friend of freedom must be as revolted as I am by the prospect of turning the United States into an armed camp, by the vision of jails filled with casual drug users and of an army of enforcers empowered to invade the liberty of citizens on slight evidence. Milton Friedman
True individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made. Franklin D. Roosevelt
I do not want art for a few any more than education for a few, or freedom for a few.William Morris
“What do you think an artist is? …he is a political being, constantly aware of the heart breaking, passionate, or delightful things that happen in the world, shaping himself completely in their image. Painting is not done to decorate apartments. It is an instrument of war.”― Pablo Picasso
History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people. Martin Luther King, Jr.
