3rd Annual Parallel Universes – The Art of Quantum Physics – The Art of Life and Death
“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious.
It is the source of all true art and science”–Albert Einstein
Artist Call For Entries
Start Art Houston, Spacetaker, Winter Street Studios and Zen Gallery Art Space announces a call for entries for the upcoming 3rd annual exhibition.
Parallel Universes showcases a collection of the best Houston artists, through the exploration of the relationship between art and quantum physics.
Featured artists include Daniel Johnston, Lester Marks, Sandi Seltzer Bryant, Paul Horn, Beans Barton, Solomon Kane, Becky Soria, Matt Messenger, Paula Hawkins, Marthann Masterson, Jean Egerton and Randall Kallinen.
An additional fifty artists will collaborate to create an “Exquisite Corpse” piece, integrating their individual art pieces into an entire work of art incorporating ‘Parallel Universes’.
Parallel Universes – the Art of Quantum Physics – Life and Death was conceived to allow artists to collaborate with each other, create new alternative art worlds, and explore the meanings of life through art and science by exploring the intersection of art and physics and that space where they intersect. The nature of another reality is often mysterious, known only by its effect on our own world. This year the theme is nothing too serious, just life and death. (Of course, The Grateful Dead will provide the theme music.)
Last year 100 artists participated, with 1,200 people attending the opening and 150 in attendance for the preceeding panel discussion on the connections between art and physics. There were presentations of dance, photography and and an exhibition of art from high school students and the from the Star of Hope’s Homeless Art Project. Artists displayed additonal works throughout Winter Street, along with open studios of the participating Winter Street Artists. Two great bands played and libations were served, courtsey of St.Arnold’s Brewery and Dripping Sprints Vodka.
Selected artists will be asked to work with other artists to integrate their art as a whole, hence the title Parallel Universes. The show will begin with the “Exquisite Corpse”, Public opening and Panel discussion on Saturday, September 17th 2011 at 5pm. Selected participants will be asked to contribute two 12” x 12” paintings that represent their concept of Quantum Physics. Artists will be provided with two 12” x 12” canvases. One piece of art will be used to create the Parallel Universes Exquisite Corpse collaborative piece. The other piece will be exhibited separately. Additional art may be displayed in the halls of Winter Street, based upon availability of space.
All paintings will be available for sale, with 70% of the proceeds going to the artist and 30% supporting Justice For Children and other charities.
There is a $ 35.00 entry fee to help cover expenses, made payable to STARTARTHOUSTON at the time artists pick up their canvases. Payment may be made by cash, check or credit card.
If you have not entered a previous Parallel Universes show, we request that you submit two Images in jpeg format, along with the required entry form. Images in J-Peg format and entry forms for artists who have not entered the show before are required and will be juried.
Previous participants can enter without going through the jury process; just send in the entry form to reserve your canvases.
ALL Entry forms are due by August 25th, 2011.
Two 12” x 12” canvases will be given to the selected artists, courtesy of Jerry’s Artarama and Start Art Houston. The canvases will be available for pick up at Winter Street Studios From Tuesday August 30th from 2 pm – 7pm.
